A Celebration of Death

Yes, Death I said.

I was recently commissioned to do a Death Certificate for someone’s father. At first I thought it strange and morbid, but as the project progressed I decided that I thought this was a really cool idea, and a nice way to capture a deceased loved one in a painting. I was asked to paint in elements that her father loved; such as roses, books, a ’57 Chevy, water, and a skull & crossbones made with tools. I also had to include his two dogs; one of them being a hilariously overweight chihuahua. At first I had no idea where to start because of all the strange elements I had to make work together… and she requested that the style and theme of the piece as a whole should be dark, tribal, and masculine. As you may know, my work is not normally ANY of the above. But I must say this piece most certainly is, in a dude-biker-kind-of way, and I’m pretty damn proud of myself for trying on something new!

This piece was done with ink and silver gel pen, on hot press watercolor paper. The printed text is separate, printed on silver paper.
