Finally Finished: “Untitled”

Posted in Updates on January 14, 2013 by coleenmcintyre

Well I have finished her, yet have not named her. This piece was in my head for a very long time, and I knew I had to finish it now that this “phase” is over. Sketches for the next in this series are already in the works, and I’m looking forward to begin processing through the next piece.

Taking THE JUMP!

Posted in Updates on January 5, 2013 by coleenmcintyre

Well, I finally did it! As of Jan 1 2013 I am finally away from my 9-5 job of 14 years and ready to explore a life of full time freelance illustration. Can I do it? Am I scared? Yes and Yes!

This means you should be seeing lots of new works from me, some more of what you’re used to seeing, and some fun experimental things now that I will *finally* have the time to make them! I can barely contain my excitement.

Winter is a time for turning within and cultivating those ideas that have been stirring for years in me. Looking forward to this wildly new 2013!

New Untitled Painting

Posted in Updates on August 20, 2012 by coleenmcintyre

I finally completed this piece (for now) this weekend. It still looks a bit unfinished to me, but it FEELS finished. This is because this piece has been in my head for over a year, and I am not quite in this place anymore. I am ready to do the next in the series. Two weeks ago I gave notice to my 9-5 job of 13 years that I am finally leaving to pursue my art. I FINALLY did, what I call – Taking the Jump. As exhilarating as it is, as you can imagine – this is scary! I have opened myself up to the universe and just somehow know I can make this work. I will be living my dream and painting full time within a years’ time, and finally out of my cage!

Happy Fall!

Posted in Updates on November 14, 2011 by coleenmcintyre

Beginning with fall I am doing a new goddess series of the seasons ~ The Wheel of the Year.

My goal is to paint each piece in the time of year I’m representing. I just realized last night that this is the very first painting I’m doing JUST to paint! Anything I’ve ever done in the past was for a show, commission or freelance project. I’m thoroughly enjoying the experience of freedom to simply paint what I feel like painting! I looked out my window this morning and absorbed all of the vibrant beautiful colors of fall. I took a deep breath, hoping to hold those colors inside so that I may translate them into this piece. She’s almost done, but not quite yet.

This is Demeter, mother of Persephone. Demeter is the goddess of the harvest, who presided over grains, the fertility of the earth and the seasons. Her daughter (soon to be illustrated as well) Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, who stole her away into the underworld. Here, she ate (4 or 6 depending on who’s telling the tale) pomegranate seeds which meant she would now have to remain in the underworld for a duration of one month per seed every year. This angered Demeter so much that she refused to nourish the earth and bring life during this time that she was forced to be away from her beloved daughter. This is when we experience winter in North America and it is also the very dry period in some lands where the story could cover those unproductive months as well.

Next I’ll be exploring Winter, focusing on Yule/Winter Solstice…

Latest completed project: Two recent commissions I did for newborn twins; Hayden and Harley. They’re 12″ x 20″ watercolor paintings. Perfect gift idea for baby showers, birthdays, or Christmas! This woman’s sister-in-law purchased a Faerie Tales Studio gift certificate from me to pay for part 0f them (used as the down-payment) and then the twins’ mom paid for the rest once completed.

Goddess series coming soon….
